John Kalas is a partner in the firm of Castle Breckenridge Management, Inc. (CBM), a full service management company, serving community associations in southern California. Located in La Mesa, near San Diego, the firm currently manages 62 associations comprised of approximately 9000 units. As working managers, Kalas and his partner James Barta lead a staff of 18 people, and have been in the same location for the past 22 years. Kalas is a certified CMCA.

As managing partner, he has been in partnership with James C. Barta since 1994. Prior to that, he owned Castle Property Management, purchased in 1990 from James Johnson, now a community relations officer for the San Diego Police Department.

In 2000 the USC School of Entrepreneurial Studies awarded a grant to CBM for small business development and completely upgraded CBM’s information technology system. CBM was awarded a grant by the School of Business from the University of Southern California (USC) in 1998. Since then, the company enjoys a state-of-the art completely integrated information system and Microsoft Suite Operating System.

Kalas was formerly on the Education Committee for Community Association Institute (CAI) and was awarded education coordinator of the year in 2002. He has authored numerous articles for Common Assessment Magazine and Condo Management Magazine. With his PhD. in psychology, Kalas qualified to speak, on several occasions, at CAI Mini-Trade Shows on "Dealing with Difficult People" in community associations.

  • CAI San Diego - He has served two years on the Educational Committee and in 2005 organized three events – including the March 30, 2005 mini-trade show on Mediation – Mock ADR. He also serves on the Ambassador Committee.

  • Kalas lives and works in La Mesa, CA where he also serves on the Parish Council of St. Spyridon’s Greek Orthodox Church, is past president for 2004-2005 of the Lemon Grove Rotary Club, and managing partner of Alpha & Omega LLC.

    His educational accomplishments are a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Psychology, Master of Education in educational psychology and Ph.D. in clinical psychology
